I've seen two such messages. One flat out says the application can't
be installed, and gives the user no option. The other says the
application probably won't work, but lets the user say yes to install
it anyway. The first shows up when appropriate, so I've seen no reason
to even try to overcome it. The second is more "interesting".
The inf file includes a way to limit operating system version numbers,
so CAB files will install only on operating systems within the
specified range (ugly sentence, sorry). Increasing the upper limit
_should_ (at least from my perspective) eliminate warnings. Increasing
that limit to 4.5 eliminated the warnings on several devices I've
encountered. But today I'm dealing with a device running version 4.1
of the operating system, and I get warnings. Sigh.
I encountered this problem while putting together an automated
backup/restore. Part of the restore can involve "running" CAB files.
The warnings are definitely not appreciated. My boss and I decided
that my restore code should pop up a message box to warn the user.
Pretty lame, but the best we could come up with, without _really_
strange code to find and close the message box.
