Vista Updates fail over and over

This "operating" system has done it again. Since I am only using the
operating system, not office, Internet explorer, etc, I have elected to
manage the updates to my system. I do all security and operating system
updates when recommended. Or at least I did until I got the last set which
includes:
Platform Update for Windows Vista (KB971644)
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB969947)
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB973565)
Synaptics - Input - Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad
Update for Windows Mail Junk E-mail Filter [November 2009] (KB905866)
Update for Windows Vista (KB972145)
Update for Windows Vista (KB973687)
Update for Windows Vista (KB976098)
Update for Windows Vista (KB976470)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - November 2009 (KB890830)
I installed these when requested, but one (unidentified) failed to download
correctly. During the install process I received a series of 3 error codes,
for which the help on this website told me to download and run again. I have
attempted this update set 3 times with the same results. Further each time it
locks my system up on reboot and the only solution is to restore to the last
system restore point.
I have now invested more than 3 hours into trying to get these "automatic"
updates installed. Is it time for a new operating system?
