Thank you MowGreen for responding.

First, I don' t know why you said "you'd be much better served starting a
new thread rather than tagging on to one that started in June." I started a
new thread.

Second, I guess i forgot to mention that I did installed and ran
Malwarebytes, that it found and removed the Hijack.windowsupdate.

I will run the scan that you mentioned below from onecare.live.com on
Tuesday when I return back to work

Second, are you sure that the system is *totally* clean of malware ?
Open Internet Explorer and see if the system can be scanned here:

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

If it can not or you've already scanned the system there, then malware
may *still be present*.
Download and *save* the free version of Malwarebytes anti-malware:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Click the ' Download free version ' button to initiate the download.
When the download completes close *all* open programs and browsers.
Install MBAM, allow it to obtain it's updated definitions, and then do a
Quick scan.
When it's done scanning click the Show results button.
IF anything is detected, make sure that everything is checked, and click
Remove Selected.

Please provide the results of the attempted OneCare Safety scan and, if
the system could *not* perform that, the results of the MBAM scan.
What, if anything, was detected ?

***IF*** nothing was detected, you can then run the System File Checker
to replace any missing system files BUT, if something *was detected*
then running sfc will just be an exercise in futility

4) renamed the Updates folder to Updates.old and tried to do the updates,
still same problem.
5) i have the windowsupdate.log file, i don't know if that will help but
