Thank you for the suggestion. I will put up a post in the ZA forum today.
One new thing of interest is that yesterday I got a message that there were
new updates available and my update window opened this time. However when I
went to look at install history , it showed 7 installs as "failed". It
showed that these installs failed on 8/15 and again on 8/21. However, one
update - Microsoft Maliscious software removal tool did get successfully
installed on 8/21 as part of the auto update process.

Subscription is current. ZA ismy only firewall and only antispyware +
windows defender. I am referring to the fix it on the link you
referenced.

Are you referring to the FixIt in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058?
What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than
Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you
bought
it)?

My windows update has not worked for a couple of weeks. I downloaded
the
Microsoft Fix It Tool but when I run it I get a message "Service
Background
Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) could not be stopped. When I go to
services the status says "stopping" but it never goes to stop. I tried
changing the properities from automatic to manual and then restarting,
thinking that the system would reboot with the BITS service never
starting
but that was folly. It then showed as started and when I tried to stop
it,
I couldn't stop it. Does anyone have additional suggestions on how I
can
get the fix it tool to run successfully? Thanks.
My system is Vista Home Premium
