Re: Windows updates failing...no response to click on fail button

80070005 is a Permissions issue being caused by the installed security software, in this case, ZoneAlarm. Either it's misconfigured, needs updating, or is incompatible with updating XP.

You could try:

1) Booting to Safe Mode with networking and hope that ZA has no running processes or services in that mode.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222
2) Clean boot XP to ensure that no 3rd party processes or services are running
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353
3) Reset ZA to it's Default configuration and see if updating is Allowed
4) See if there's an update to ZA that Allows updates to install successfully, or alternatively, uninstall ZA and install security software that is compatible with the updating of XP.

I am running xp sp2, auto updates enabled. I ran windows update today and discovered many updates failing. It appears they stated failing in the last few weeks. When I click on the red fail button, I get no response. Any way to determine why they are failing? BTW, one of the updates in the 8/12 set did install, most failed.

Check out the WindowsUpdate.log to see *when* the updates started to fail to install, Need:

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

Look for FATAL messages and post back with the error codes, please.
And, please, do *NOT* attempt to install the failed updates again.

QEDs:
1) What is the installed security software (antivirus/security suite/3rd party firewall/etc.) ?
2) When was the last time the system was scanned for the presence of malware ?
