BITS is set to Manual, correct ?

That may have been the "clue" error code, Jan ... or not.

Anyway: checked out services and noticed that the WindowsUpdate was not
started after startup.

So: restarted the service using regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll and indeed;
Windowsupdate appeared back into the Services menu, but was not running.

Registering wuaueng.dll *reLISTED* the Service in Service console ?
And then you had to Start the service, correct ?

Hmmmm ... I'm not sure if this issue is related to the application of SP2, security software, or "unwanted guests".

Since we are not 100% certain that WU was functioning properly prior to the application of SP2 (manual updating was done) but we do know that Defender was updating automatically ( which is usually a good indication that WU is functioning properly ) ... when SP2 was applied was the antivirus/security suite *actively* monitoring the system, Jan ?

(although I have the strong feeling we're messing around here in the
registry, haha)
