I'm afraid I don't get a warm, fuzzy feeling about the above, Harry, and it may be related to your current problem. May we assume you've rebooted since upgrading from IE8 Beta to IE8 Final on 01 Apr-09? Any chance you installed Vista SP1 while IE8 Beta was installed?

successful installation and configuration went smoothly, I had assumed the
final version was installed OK. But now I'm not sure what I have....the
version shown is 8.0.6001,18702.
As for your other questions: No, I did not disable Avast or Ad-Aware
prior to IE-8 DL. The error codes reported in WUP History is the same for
all the failures: 80071A91.
And I have not tried a manual download of the failed updates.
