When (date) did your previous KIS subscription expire?
Did you uninstall your previous version of KIS and then run the removal tool (http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208279463) before installing KIS 2009?
Are you absolutely certain that you were able to access/use Windows Update before you installed KIS 2009 (e.g., on 05 Jan-09 and earlier)?
Is Automatic Updates enabled?

I had an older version of KIS but my licensce expired so I bought the new
KIS 2009. I have been using KIS since I bought the laptop a little over a
year ago and this problem just started recently. The error code that I am
getting with the windows update is "Code 80070057 Windows encounterd an
unknown error"

What anti-virus application was installed before you installed KIS 2009 on
06 January, Nicole?

happening since 1/6/2009 the same day I installed Kaspersky Internet
Security 2009. The last available updated was in December some time. I
have tried so many things to fix the problem. If anyone could help that
would be great. Thanks!
