I installed the WGA thing. I have nothing to fear.
You were lucky. The Internet is chock full of posts where WGA (both
flavors) falsely accused them of piracy.
Sure, but that comprises only a very tiny fraction of all the computers
where WGA was installed. To the best of my knowledge, it doesn't have a
significantly higher failure rate than the average update.

Harry.
If it happens on ONE computer, that ONE person is very, very
inconvenienced so why install it? It does NOTHING to improve *anything*.

It can also be what the user has on his system. Did he tweak something he
shouldn't of? Malware? Malware removed but remnants still there? I think
with the exception of a very, very small group, the false positives are
rare.

No, they aren't. MS has even set up a forum for those who get false
positives.

You mentioned spyware. This obviously isn't spyware then. More like a
nuisance to very few.

It spies on your computer and relays information to the Microsoft Mother
Ship. If that ain't spying, I don't know what is.

How do you get your updates then? Automatic Update checks as well. Just a
different way.

I use Auto Update and make sure that the Windows Genuine Advantage Tool
is never downloaded or installed as it is not a security update nor is
it anything that will improve Windows. I have already proved to MS twice
that my copy is legal:

1. When I handed over the hard cash to buy it. I have a receipt.
2. When I activated.

If they want more, they can jolly well get a court order to see my sales
receipt and/or inspect the CD and product key.

The fact that people think that working for Microsoft to catch pirates
is normal is scary. Last I heard, catching criminals is a police job,
not a part of buying a software license.

Not that one, the Activex one. You are referring to WGA/N.

You can always go to the Windows Update site and download the
updates. No sense in putting off the security updates.
There's one good reason not to go to the Windows Update and that
is that there is spyware waiting for you there in the form of WGA.

Thank you. It's easier to live with something if you know
there's no fix for various quirks.

Is this common and / or is their a fix for this? Thanks!
It's common and no fix has been made available that I know of.
Having patience is the only thing that works. I'm waiting on
the yellow shield to reappear as I type this ;-)
