LET THE BEATINGS BEGIN!!! OK, I removed unused applications, ran disk clean,
defragged, installed superantispyware, malwarebytes, threatfire, and
combofix. backed up my system, scanned the hard disk for errors-zero found.
I ran windows update, but it didn't say anything about the drivers for the
mother board sound card etc...I think I'm going about that wrong, so if you
could set me straight on that it'd be nice.
Um...ok, the system is still running bad, audion still doesn't work,
so...any other steps?
Should I revert back to pre sp1, keep trying to clean up any virus type crap
I've missed so far the past day or so then reinstall sp1?

You installed SP1 on an infected machine and with Norton running in the.
background? More power to you! I'll leave you in Shenan's very capable
hands for the cluestick beating you deserve.

I'm using Norton. I followed their online instructions on using the
removal
tool. It was Trojan.Brisv.A!inf Ok, so there may be more viruses, but
why
is it that every time I allow Windows to make an updated that it recomends
my system stops working? Before I installed SP-1 it said I may need to
reinstall my audio hardware drivers...I did, but they still don't work,
so....where's that leave us?

I installed it, and then all of my audio recording interfaces and
midi control devices stopped working. My recording software also
no longer has audio. Windows HD Audio stopped working. I
downloaded new post SP-1 drivers and still nothing. Do I need to
revert back to pre-SP-1 updates? I'd really like to totally just
go back to XP cause so far VISTA has caused me nothing but trouble
and let a lot of viruses onto my system.

Viruses are something you get because of poor maintenance and
habits - not because of the OS (necessarily) that you are running.
Sounds to me like you didn't maintain your computer and now it has
issues. You should take it to someone who can do a proper cleanup
for you and get things working again.

I maintained my antivirus every day at least once. The biggest
issues I have are that my audio gear and interfaces I use are
getting screwed up each and every time Microsoft gives me an
update. I hate updates. They are regressing, not progressing
vista's usefullness for me. Just as I start to get it, it starts
to act up again with the updates.

Why'd you reply to yourself? I assume that was meant for me. I
went ahead and put my part back in above.
First - if you maintained your AntiVirus (AV) software and still got
viruses, then you should consider a different AV solution.
Obviously it's not doing it for you.
The other possibility is that you did not get a virus/trojan/worm -
but spyware/adware/malware (there is a slight difference, although
it is more of a fuzzy area.) What AntiSpyware solution do you use?
In any case - I brought it up because you brought it up. The point
being that if you didn't maintain the system well enough to prevent
the large and intrusive issues like viruses, you probably did not
maintain all the little things either (not to mention - how do you
know you got rid of all your
virus/trojan/worm/spyware/adware/malware issues?)
Do you utilize Disk Cleanup?

Do you scan it for spyware/adware/malware periodically?
MalwareBytes

SuperAntiSpyware

(Free is fine.)
Do you uninstall unused applications?
Do you keep Windows up-to-date (obviously not if you just updated
to SP1 for WIndows Vista. *grin*)
Do you keep all your other software up-to-date?
Have you checked for the latest drivers for your hardware (not just
the sound device - what about the motherboard chipset? The network
card? The video card?)
What is your backup plan? How and how often do you backup your
stuff?
Updates work fine for *many* more people than they do not work fine
for on a overall scale. There are exceptions (bad updates) but
Windows Vista SP1 is not one of those exceptions. ;-)
My suggestions for you are to:
- Backup your stuff.
- Do a Disk Cleanup session.
- Run at least MalwareBytes on your computer, I'd also follow up
with SuperAntiSpyware personally.
- Check for ALL hardware updates from the hardware manufacturer(s)
and install the latest hardware drivers.
- Check your disk for errors.
- Defragment.
Come back - I'd be curious as to your results. Especially after
doing a cleanup and updating the motherboard chipset drivers
followed by the audio drivers.

Was SP1 offered by Windows Update or did you decide to install it
manually?

It was offered by automatic update, I allowed it. I liked how it
was running before it was installed. How do I get it off?
That would be one of the worst choice, IMHO. SP1 is good for Vista.
