Never mind the 30+ HOURS that it will take to download KB951847 update on my
dial-up connection -- After downloading it for about 3 hours or so, my IP

Try to find out what BITS is doing before that.
E.g. in a cmd window (aka Command Prompt) enter:
bitsadmin /monitor /allusers
More than that, the "Automatic Update" program still thinks I'm on
my former Comcast high-speed connection because it opens the Comcast IE
window even tho' I had to go back to dial-up when I moved to my present
residence and had to get the Yahoo! Browser & IP;
I think you may be misinterpreting something
but you haven't given enough information to
even speculate what you might be seeing.
E.g. if your OS is Vista and you are using its Windows
Update menu item there is no browser connection.
therefore the Auto Update
program doesn't "stop and start" like it should when I go on and offline.
You're referring now to the AU icon in the Notification area
of the Taskbar? If you doubleclick or right-click on it
what do you see?
Again, try using bitsadmin to test your assumption.
Look in the WindowsUpdate.log too to find out what
is really going on. Ref. KB902093. Note that if necessary
you could supplement any logging you do get with either
the verbose registry hack that article documents or by
running ProcMon.
This means that after all day of downloading from the Windows Auto Update
site, all of the 1/16th or so of the update that DID download is lost.
As your other responder has mentioned I think that this
would be an error. AU is supposed to be able to restart
and recover usefully. You should even be able to manage
the downloading even more than its limited heuristic
allows by using right-click Suspend and Resume
if you are being bothered by it while you are trying to do
other online work. Alternatively do the equivalent commands
using bitsadmin.
My questions:
1) Is there a way to get KB951847 on a CD so I don't have to tie up my only
phone line for DAYS downloading this update (especially since my dial-up
connection won't stay connected that long with no other activity going on in
the browser)?
2) Failing that, is there a way to change the setting on Auto Update so that
it opens in my present dial-up Yahoo! browser window instead of my old
Comcast high-speed one so I won't lose all of the update that has been loaded
so far?
Again, which OS?
Any help would be much appreciated...
