My problem is that when I go to Add/Remove programs now .. I have every
single version of Microsoft Net Framework from 1 to 3.5...
That has nothing to do with the topic of this thread, I'm afraid. If having all those .NET Framework versions & updates installed concerns you, please discuss it in a new thread in microsoft.public.windowsxp.general newsgroup.
I do not think that installing the .NET Framework updates had anything to do with Windows Update starting to work again. If you followed even some of the instructions in my first reply to this thread (http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/msg/b691084a4994fe84), I'd venture to say that the scans in Step #1 and #2 found and removed at least some of the hijackware that had been affecting your machine. Despite the fact that everything appears to be OK now, I would not trust the machine just yet. See Step #3 of my first reply.
If any dependent Services had been disabled, I expect the hijackware disabled them.
I would NOT go messing around disabling/enabling Services. I would NOT uninstall anything named .NET Framework.
do we have to wait until June to have this new streamlined version of
Windows available?
I would not expect Windows 7 (Win7) to be out of beta (released) until much later this year (e.g., 4Q09 at the earliest). PS: You will not be able to Upgrade from WinXP to Win7 nor would I expect your WinXP hardware to work properly with Win7 installed.
Good luck. Over & out.

PA Bear I want to thank you so much for replying to me at all ... ! Thank
you. I truly have worked very very hard at this .. spent way too much time
on this but yes it is working now. Updating to the newest version of IE 8
(that WORKS with SP3) helped a bit ... but no significant change in Windows
Update. Taking MSN Mail out of being my default mail provider seemed to
free up something because like I said MSN Explorer is a plundering slow
freezing browser compared to the IE8 but of course now I have to go to
another place here on the community .. to find out why we still have to
have both of these browsers installed. It was the playing with my services
and trying to see what I needed to have on via Black Viper's SP3
recommendations ... and then for some reason the .NET Framework 3 and 3.5
kicking in and downloading into Windows Update and now yes they have
installed.
My problem is that when I go to Add/Remove programs now .. I have every
single version of Microsoft Net Framework from 1 to 3.5 and that is a huge
amount of STUFF and I am not sure I even need or use this! But uninstalling
it I am sure might trigger Windows Update to not work again. So now I have
to research to see whether I need these this service running since it has a
.NET version that is older than 3.5 but it does seem like once I started it
.. somehow it may have contributed to allowing Windows update to work. At
least the ASP.NET State Service stopped so maybe I can disable that one.
These services take up alot of memory don't they?
This truly has been 3 months of struggle and now all I want to do is change
my operating system and erase all of this. But at least it is working. So
do we have to wait until June to have this new streamlined version of
Windows available? Thank you again .. it's very stressful this stuff ...
and you people who come here and help us are extremely valuable. Thank you.

Do all three (3) steps in that post and/or open a free Support Incident.

months!!!!
It's not great .. it's moving much slower than what my computer has been
moving at with the new memory I installed and the speeded up DSL. You're
funny .. yes you are right .. enough problem but at least now I have
Internet Explorer 8 running fast ... and this horrible MSN explorer
whenever I open the window freezes almost everything .. BUT sure enough
...
Windows Update is NOW configuring or showing up .. or whatever you want
to
say it is doing ... in both browsers!!!!
It started up at first only, well here is what I wrote ... it's not
working
totally yet but I can tell you I did everything and to run the OneCare
scan
and YES I got it installed too, only to get an error message that is 2
years
old on that site and my next steps were going to have to be about
uninstalling Windows and all of this stuff that I just can not deal with
...The other thing I notice is that Norton 360 scanstub.exe is not starting<MORE SNIPPAGE>
..
I can not get the Norton 360 window to come up so that I could tell it to
fix the one setting. This is the FIRST time that Norton 360 will not
open
and coincidentally the first time in 3 months that Windows update is
working.
"PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote:Why are you replying to yourself?
You've got enough problems. I wouldn't add to them by installing beta
software (i.e., IE8 RC1)!
Was Norton 360 running in the background and was Spybot's Tea Timer
and/or
Ad-Aware's Guard and/or Ad-Watch services enabled when you installed
WinXP
SP3? ...IE8 RC1?
sbc wrote:oh great .. thank you so much for replying ... I have been going thru<SNIP>
so
many of these .. so that yesterday I ran the malicious software tool
completely (took quite a while so I think it worked) and it came up
with
nothing ... I am going to go thru your whole list .. I just wanted to
add
in ... and I am sorry but I have been working at this somewhat
desperately
lately ... I just about feel like giving up and I am working hard at
TRYING
EVERYTHING that I see recommended. So what I did is notice that at
least
I
could update Internet Explorer 7 back to a new 8 release 1 that WORKS
WITH
SP3 already installed ...
My spybot program is installed at the latest but when the<SNIP>
computer started freezing so much after the SP3 download .. I thought
why
do I have to run Norton 360 AS WELL as spybot and adaware. (I had both
installed and was a paying subscriber to Lavasoft which eventually just
confused me so much that I uninstalled .. or tried to.)Anyway I will now proceed to go to the rest of your steps ...
<SNIP>
Sorry to add more ... but really by now it seems to have pervaded
everything because it seems like I have tried everything. Of all of
the
files to re-register .. the one I am having the most trouble with is
mshmtl.dll (I think that is it). So upon searching I come up with the
Internet Explorer security update that just released in Feb 2009 and
is
called
"Microsoft Security Bulletin MS09-002 - Critical
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (961260)"
I would love to just at least install that update but there is no
place
for
me to find that particular download and of course when I go to Windows
automatic update ... the same old thing happens again.

I can barely say anymore what I am trying to do in order to have this
fixed .. since SP3 downloaded via Automatic Updates into my well
functioning WinXP SP2 Intel Pent 4 computer in Oct of 08 ... I have
not
had Windows Update work. Maximum amount of memory upgraded to 2 gigs
installed .. my Verizon broadband DSL increased ... every single step
in
the very thorough Castle Cops How To Fix Windows Update internet file
that was posted here a couple of months ago ... uninstalling Internet
Explorer 8 Beta and going back to IE 7 .... all the time continuing
to
pay for my MSN subscription which I have had from the start and knew
that
MSN Mail was one of the best but ALSO since October my MSN Explorer
windows that MSN Mail ran in .. slowed down to frozen all of the time
...
So now I have switched in IE 7 that my default email program is
Windows
Live Mail and was at least able to download the later versions of
those
programs .. and at first they worked at normal speed but now they too
seem to be clogged with whatever is preventing my computer from
seeing
I
NEED to have Windows Update work!
Finally I am just starting to look at the Windows update log even
though
I
can not decipher what it says ... it actually indicates that perhaps
sometimes over the last 3 months there have been some updates
installed
but I can't possibly see that. I go to Windows/Microsoft update via
MSN
Explorer .. via Internet Explorer and I download the update agent
over
and over and over again and always go back to the same window.
SP3 was not rolled back off of my computer .. it could not be
uninstalled
and it has stayed and now I see that there is an IE 8 that works with
XP
SP3 ... I wonder would that help me somehow get later registry
versions
of
mshmtl.dll that does not seem to be registering whenever I go thru
that
long list of files that I am supposed to try to re-register.
Is COMAPI a service I can start in my services area? I have BITS
started
and automatic updates started cryptographic service started and have
sent
in data files but I truly can not continue to wait .. manually
installing
the last 3 months of critical updates is what I would try but I look
at
them and don't even know how far my Microsoft .NET program versions
go
and if this is instrumental in me getting Windows update to work.
My Reporting Events. log and the Windows Update. log now are what I
am
trying to decipher. Oh and I have configured Norton 360 to not scan
the
folders under Software distribution and Security and then always
check
in
those directories to make sure that some new virus files have not
downloaded. Course I also have my Windows Firewall ON with ports
configured and programs configured ...
I really really need Windows Update to start working again.
