Re: Administrators only message

XP64

IE7

Built new system in January with XP64 - WU worked in January

WU failed February upate - around the 3rd

ESET NOD32 AV current

Only other anti spyware is WinPatrol.

wouldn't have a Norton or McAfee app on my system

No firewall - I'm behind two routers

Everything worked fine after the initial install of XP64 and all apps.

I've added no apps since then. First problem was a simple WU has encountered an error message with no further explanation. At the suggestion of MS tech support rep WU files were uninstalled and downloaded fresh files and installed. Since then been getting the Admin only message not the WU has encountered an error message.

Are you running WinXP SP2 or SP3? Have you upgraded to IE7? [These are just questions, not suggestions/recommendations.]

How long have you been having this problem? Did you recently have occasion to reinstall Windows for any reason?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed SP3 and/or IE7, as the case may be?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Been there, done that. No joy. Tried it with and w/o a password - get same

Try logging on *as* the Administrator before attempting to install updates
"manually."

Running XP64 -

I always have auto updates off and once a month, manually connect and
update
my system. This month I got a generic "windows update has had an error"
with
a subsequent abort. After trying various things I finally emailed MS Tech
Support. On her advice, I deleted all the dll's etc and reinstalled WU
files. Now, when I access WU, I get the "Administrator's only" error.

I AM the Admin and I have no policies set. I even tried vreating a new
admin
account - same issue.

I'm still waiting to hear from MSTS again but she usually emails me a
suggestion once a week.

If I enable auto updates however, they WILL download and install but I
prefer doing it manually.

Followed the steps outlined in the KB and all policies and settings are
as
the suggest.

Any idea what the problem might be? Basically WU does NOT recognize that
I
am the Admin or that I am a member of the Admin group.

Thanx,

Vic
