Robear,
I did on Saturday afternoon. Specialist tech support was not available.
I was then called before 6 AM and woke me from a sound sleep.
I called back Sunday afternoon, PST and again no IE/Win Tech support available
Please do not respond again, you are just cluttering my thread with MowGreen
and not providing any additional information.

I am not getting an error message. So ignore the first part of my post and try Steps 1 through 5 anyway.
There is a freeze of either IE7 or OE and they have to be terminted with
the Task Manager or at Shut-down along with RUNDLL32.EXE.
I f you have been following this thread, you will notice that I already
removed my McAfee Security Service and bad news is I can not reinstall
it.
Keep having download issues.
I have tried several combinations of the December Updates.
Right now, I am a restore point with just the Office Updates and the
system seems stable.
Thanks for the PCSAFETY number. I have called and opened a case #.
The first Tech could not identify my problem today, so I will call back
tomorrow.

If tweaking your third-party (McAfee) firewall's settings don't help,
try
the following:
1. Disable your anti-virus application, any real-time protection
provided
by an anti-spyware application (except for Windows Defender; includes
Spybot Tea Timer, SpySweeper Guards, AVG AS guard.exe, etc.), disable
any
third-party (McAfee) firewall AND THEN enable the Windows Firewall.
NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online
(e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) except #4 below until your
anti-virus application has been re-enabled!
2. Uninstall "Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7
(KB958215)"
via Add/Remove Programs (make sure Show Updates box is checked at top
right) and reboot.
3. IMPORTANT! => Re-do #1 above.
4. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any Critical
Updates offered (i.e., KB958215). If a Root Certificates update is
listed in the Optional Updates category, install it to take full
advantage
of IE7's enhanced security.
5. Reboot > Make sure everything in #1 above is enabled again and, if
applicable, disable the Windows Firewall and enable (or reinstall) your
third-party firewall.

After restoring to a point before the December updates,
I installed in groups:
Office 2002/XP Security Updates KB958372, KB958439, KB956828 &
KB956329
then
Security Updates for Windows XP KB954600, KB956802, KB952069 &
KB955839
and did not have the problem; however, after installing
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP
KB958215.
The hanging Outlook Express and rundll32.exe problem was back again.
Office components seem to work OK, but other systems functions like IE
and
"Add/Remove Programs" are hanging with the RUNDLL32.EXE.
It is begining to like the permanent solution is to convert to a
MacIntosh.

Nice going, Ray. It's *always* best to first determine if malware is
present.
Check in Add/Remove Programs to see which updates were installed from
the bunch released for December. They'll be listed under 'Windows
XP-Software Updates', at the bottom of the list. Be sure that the
'Show
updates' box is checked towards the top of the window.
If there are Office programs installed, check under MS Office to see
which ones were installed.
When you ascertain all of the updates that were installed, please
post
back with what they were.

Not really, Ray. We need to make sure that malware is not causing
all
these issues.
Either have the system scanned here:

Or, seek assistance from a reputable anti-malware forum. At the
very
least, you'll be able to determine that the issues are not related
to
malware:

"MowGreen [MVP]" wrote:
An 'issue' with McAfee is the culprit. First, suggest you use
Internet Explorer and have the system scanned to see if this
issue
is due to the presence of malware:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm
IF no malware is detected, next try a Repair of McAfee from
Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
If that brings no joy, then uninstall McAfee from within
Add/Remove;
reboot, and then run the McAfee removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?lc=1033&id=TS100507
Running the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool (MCPR.exe)
removes
all 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 versions of McAfee consumer
products
MCPR.exe
http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
Reinstall McAfee now.
