There a *quite* a number of errors in the component store that were most likely caused by KIS.
Canthe system update now ?
Did you install the WUA with all of KIS' services and processes temporarily disabled ... and the native Vista firewall enabled ?

If you boot to Safe Mode with Networking then all of KIS' services and processes should *not* be loading.

Checking my windows updates history recently I discovered that it had not be installing updates since early November and that each time it was failing to install Windows update Agent 7.2.6001.788

This talks about a re-installation or "reparation" which is the one thing I haven't tried yet. Re-installation would be a nightmare and I'd spend all my Christmas holidays re-installing applications. I'm not sure about the reparation procedure that is described; that may be the last resort.

This doesn't refer to the same error number but as it was about update problems I followed all the steps in there and still couldn't get updates to continue.

This doesn't seem to be relevent as it's about when the updates can't be retrieved. I can retrieve them just not install them.

I submitted an error report to Microsoft and got a "I don't know, ask someone else" reply that simply asked me to check the knowledge base and the forum.

Searching the knowledge base gives no results on that error number
