You could try clearing out the temporary WU files as well as the IE's
temporary files.
Reboot.

Then if appropriate reinstall the WU agent.

Toshiba Laptop, Celeron M

Windows XP Home SP2, IE 6

Automatic Updates OFF - I manually update "custom" after each MS security
bulletin.

****************

I have had no problems with Windows / Microsoft Update since this computer
was new in June, 2006.

In Mid November, after my usual "custom" update, I tried to update to
SP3 -
I had waited to allow any early bugs to be resolved - and SP3 failed to
install.

( On another computer, I had just successfully installed SP3, and the
December updates on that desktop have been no problem )

This laptop has essentially identical software and system configuration as
my desktop, and has never failed to update before.

When I tried to do the December updates on the laptop, using the "Check
for
the latest Updates from Windows Update", the update "froze".

I then followed recent advice on this site ( most particularly information
from "Kino" at MS from this thread

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/itproxpsp/thread/ac5e5a4b-e6ee-4c76-857f-b75e87d5bf22/

which seemed a good summary of much of which I read on other threads in
this forum.

I also thoroughly scanned for malware, deleted temp files, put all
relevant
MS sites in the trusted zone, turn on auto updates, check all services,
etc.

On the next attempt, the update process goes to the next screen, "Welcome
to
Windows Update", but when I click either "Custom" or "Express", the end
result

is the start of the "download progress bar" followed instantly by the
failure screen:

"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the
problem",
and

[Error number: 0x80070006].

The C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log shows the
following
at the end of the single line entry for any update attempt"

"WindowsUpdate Failure Software Synchronization Windows Update Client
failed
to detect with error 0x80070006."

I can attach the ( much longer ) portion of the
C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log related to an update attempt if that is
permittable ?

****************

It seems to me that the failed install of SP3 might have corrupted the
update process, but I am unable to fix the problem.

Help !!!! Please !!!
