The solution is in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958044 as TaurArian
said in his first response.
My problem with that solution was in step 7 (method for Windows Vista),
because my DVD was for Vista and I had installed VISTA SP1, therefore the
"Upgrade" option was disabled.
I searched in the microsoft support site and found that article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948537 about uninstalling VISTA SP1. I
followed method 3, and then I applied the previous solution for error code
80070490, but that time, the option "Upgrade" was available. After more
than 3 hours, Windows Vista was repaired and I can use Windows Update
again.
Thank you for helping me to solve the problem.

At least not all was lost.
Unfortunately there's nothing I can suggest, the only cure seems to be a
repair install and you can't do that (although you might try it again
after doing the SFC as it might have fixed something).

I tried the SFC tool and a long list of repairs were done, but Updates
still doesn't work, the same error code.
Well, at least I learned a new tool.
Thank you.

Hi there, things are now not looking good.
Desperate, perhaps try "SFC" = System File Checker.
To assist you - these articles provide information that may help
How to analyze the log file entries that the Microsoft Windows Resource
Checker (SFC.exe) program generates in Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228
Some Windows Vista functions may not work, or Windows Vista may stop
responding
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
Please note: If files require replacing SFC will replace them. You'll
need to Vista DVD as you may be asked to insert the same to continue the
process.
Naturally you'll need to run the command as an administrator.
Good luck.
Before trying anything I would back up any important data just in case.

Yes, you are right, "upgrading" from Windows Vista to Windows Vista is
not really an upgrade.
How can I do a repair installation?
The "upgrade" option is disabled and the other option reinstalls Windows
completely. I'm leaving this option for the last one.

Did you try the *repair* installation?
Okay step 7 mentions "upgrade", it's just part of the steps to repair the
installation.

Yes, I did.
Look at step 7.
"To perform a repair installation of Windows Vista or of Windows Server
2008, follow these steps:
Close all applications, and then restart the computer.
Insert the Windows Vista DVD or the Windows Server 2008 DVD in the
computer's DVD drive.
In the Setup window, click Install Now.
Note If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these
steps:
Click Start
Collapse this imageExpand this image
, and then type Drive:\setup.exe in the Start Search box.
Note The Drive placeholder is the drive letter of the computer's DVD
drive.
In the Programs list, click Setup.exe.
In the Setup window, click Install Now.
Click Go online to obtain the latest updates for installation
(recommended).
Type the CD key if you are prompted to do this.
Click Yes to accept the Microsoft Software License Terms.
On the Which kind of installation to you want? screen, click Upgrade.
When the installation is complete, restart your computer, and then try to
install the updates."

Did you read the article"http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958044"?
It didn't mention *upgrade* it said *repair*.
"Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008
To resolve this issue, you must perform a repair installation of Windows
Vista or Windows Server 2008. Performing a repair installation will
restore
the current Windows installation to the version of the installation DVD.
This also requires the installation of all updates that are not included
on
the installation DVD.
Note Performing a repair installation will not damage files and
applications
that are currently installed on your computer."

Any other idea?

See if this helps - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958044
otherwise post back with more information, like what OS you're using
etc
including SP level.
