Rose,
The issue you describe may possibly be caused by the need to register an xml.dll. Give this a shot ... click Start > Run > type in the below and then click OK or press Enter
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
Try to update link in the Start Menu. If the system fails to update, *right* click the Windows Update link on the start menu and choose Properties.
What's in the Target: line ?

I'm tagging on to this thread because I am on a Xp pro 64 bit - new on Oct 9/08
I'm getting the same situation at the windows update page....no scanning happens- an error in page results
it is the address with V4 in it
When you referenced the Au Check file in a post previous in this thread there is not a link or address as to where to download it
'If no joy, go here, download and *save*: AU Check (v78a)
Once the download completes close *all* open browsers and programs.
Temp disable the installed AV/security suite
Now run au_check_v78a_codeplex.exe and allow it some time to complete
it's operation.'
I do not have a host file in SysWow64/drivers but there is one in the system32. There are no update sites listed in that host file just 127.0.0.1 localhost.
I just followed your instructions to type the wuauclt/detectnow
The log displayed that the downloads done yesterday were successful i.e. no updates required and it used the V6 address

So its just the actual Microsoft Update Page link in the start menu that has a glitch i.e. producing V4 site
