Thank you for this information. I was not aware of Avast. I checked the independent comparatives and found that Avast has good performance. (See report from August 2008 http://www.av-comparatives.org.)
However, Avast is not listed as a Microsoft vendor. See list updated April 2008 at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/49500.
Who cares? Windows XP security recognizes it and it does its job.
I have already purchased a Norton subscription but will keep an open mind to consider other products when it expires.
Avast is free. Dumping Norton costs you nothing.

You do know that Symantec is only trying to milk every dollar out of Peter Norton's name, don't you? In short, you would be better off with Avast which is free and using the Windows Firewall than exposing your computer to the tentacles of Norton.

Are you running WinXP SP2 or SP3?
Did all updates install successfully?
What version of NAV is installed (e.g., NAV 2006) and is your subscription current? Did you recently upgrade NAV (e.g., from NAV 2007 to NAV 2009)?
Have you contacted Symantec Support about this behavior?

restarted, however Norton Antivirus did not load into the running
configuration. I was unable to start Norton manually; I had to reboot again
in order to load Norton.
This is the first time I've experienced a conflict between Automatic Updates
and Norton Antivirus. I would like to understand what happened so I can
prevent this in the future. Or, is there a setting I should examine to
ensure that the process continues smoothly?
The updates were:
- Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2
(KB954430)
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB955069)
- Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB957832)
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB954459)
- Security Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB951535)
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB957097)
- Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - November 2008 (KB890830)
Thanks in advance for any insight.
