Re: After Updates Antivirus Required 2nd reboot

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Norton applications are notorious for not uninstalling cleanly. If the NAV issues persist and Symantec Support is of no use:

1. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key for NAV (2009?), uninstall all Norton software (including LiveUpdate) via Add/Remove Programs.

2. IMPORTANT! => Make certain the Windows Firewall is enabled!

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) except #3 through #5 below until your anti-virus application has been installed and fully updated!

3a. Download this removal tool to your desktop: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

3b. Double-click in the saved file to run the tool.

4. Reboot.

5. Reinstall NAV (2009?), run LiveUpdate manually & repeatedly until you get a "No more updates available" prompt.

6. See if the Malicious Software Removal Tool will download/run now. If not, see if you can download & run it manually: http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

Thank you for your interest. To answer your questions:
I am running WinXP SP3.
All of today's Microsoft updates installed successfully.
I reported this behavior to Norton this morning.
I am running NAV 16.1 with a current subscription. I uninstalled old and
installed new version 9/27/2008 and all subsequent updates. Since this NAV
installation I have successfully installed Microsoft updates to .NET
(9/27), Office (9/27, 10/16, 11/13), IE (10/16), XP (9/27, 10/4, 10/16,
10/24, 11/13). Today was the first time I experienced this issue.

Did all updates install successfully?

What version of NAV is installed (e.g., NAV 2006) and is your subscription
current? Did you recently upgrade NAV (e.g., from NAV 2007 to NAV 2009)?

Have you contacted Symantec Support about this behavior?

After receiving automatic security updates on 11/13/2008 my computer
restarted, however Norton Antivirus did not load into the running
configuration. I was unable to start Norton manually; I had to reboot
again
in order to load Norton.

This is the first time I've experienced a conflict between Automatic
Updates
and Norton Antivirus. I would like to understand what happened so I can
prevent this in the future. Or, is there a setting I should examine to
ensure that the process continues smoothly?

The updates were:
- Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2
(KB954430)
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB955069)
- Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB957832)
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB954459)
- Security Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB951535)
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB957097)
- Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - November 2008 (KB890830)

Thanks in advance for any insight.
