After Updates Antivirus Required 2nd reboot

After receiving automatic security updates on 11/13/2008 my computer
restarted, however Norton Antivirus did not load into the running
configuration. I was unable to start Norton manually; I had to reboot again
in order to load Norton.
This is the first time I've experienced a conflict between Automatic Updates
and Norton Antivirus. I would like to understand what happened so I can
prevent this in the future. Or, is there a setting I should examine to ensure
that the process continues smoothly?
The updates were:
- Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2
(KB954430)
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB955069)
- Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB957832)
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB954459)
- Security Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB951535)
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB957097)
- Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - November 2008 (KB890830)
Thanks in advance for any insight.
