@benzitsoatl:
Do the machines connnect to the internet if the're connected directly to the router or modem?
What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
KB958644 is a VERY important update to have installed! See
http://blogs.technet.com/mmpc/archive/2008/10/23/get-protected-now.aspx
If the choice boils down to installing KB958644 or having wireless access, I'd strongly recommend the former. Afterwards, you can work with free MS Support to figure out why your wireless card or router isn't working:
Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527
Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport
For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB958644).
For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx
For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

KB958644 messed up my wireless connectivity at home. All my computers
were not able to connect to my XP computer with Linksys router. I
uninstalled KB958644, DISABLED Auto Windows updates so it wouldn't load
up again. After a while (boot up and reset of router) all my computers
around the house were finally able to connect to internet through the
linksys.
Moral of the story, KB958644 screwed up my router. Some posting around
the web said it was because of their antivirus. I tried disabling
antivirus, nothing worked until I got rid of that KB958644 update.
Makes me want to buy a Macintosh if those dimwits at Microsoft can't get
their act together. Things like this will make a Chinese generic OS
come in and take over one of these days. Brighten up MS!
