Make sure the SQL Server service [ SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) ]is set to startup automatically in the Services console Start> Run> type in services.msc
Click OK or press Enter
*Right* click SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS. For startup type, set it to Automatic.
Click the Log On tab.
Make sure the first option is chosen, Log on as Local System Account.
Also, the disk space required to install SP2 shown here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=31711d5d-725c-4afa-9d65-e4465cdff1e7&displaylang=en
may not be adequate. Make sure that at least 1 1/2 GB of free disk space is available.
You could also try the suggested resolutions here, but I'm not certain that they pertain to this situation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
Other than that ... if they don't resolve the error, suggest you do a Search of the SQL Server forum for error 0x80092004 . If no joy, then start a thread there:

Check the WindowsUpdate.log to see if there are any FATAL error codes showing for the updates that failed to install or, see if there were KBxxxxxx.logs [replace the x's with the numbers of the update KB]
created in WINDOWS. If so, open the installation logs to see if any errors are showing.
How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093
You could also check the System Event log to see if there are any Errors with the Source being Windows Update Agent.
*Right* click My Computer either on the Desktop or Start Menu and choose Manage.
The Sys Event log is under System Tools.

regsvr32 %windir%\syswow64\wups2.dll
That's the command for 64-bit[x64] editions of XP. XP Pro can be either 32-bit or 64-bit. Successfully running regsvr32 wups2.dll means your system is XP Pro, 32-bit [x86].
You can see which Version of XP is installed by going to
Start > Run > type in
msinfo32
Click OK or press Enter.
Look in the right frame next to OS Name and System Type to confirm this.
Feel better now ? <w>

i followed that first solution and the updates look like they are installing. i am supposed to have win xp professional which is what the "my computer" says. based on the instructions i typed this command and got a file not found error.
regsvr32 %windir%\syswow64\wups2.dll
when i typed the command for all other operating systems it worked.
does that mean i dont have xp professional even though "my computer" says that is the OS.
and to answer your question xp was reinstalled because i had to do a full system restore with discs from Acer due to numerous issues.

all of a sudden i am being told updates are available for windows xp through windows update. there are 35 available and all fail to download. when i looked closer they say it is 0kb and 0 minutes to download and each individual one says the same thing when i click to expand it.
That's an indication that the updates are already downloaded but are failing to install.
Was SP3 applied recently; was a Repair Installation performed; was XP reinstalled ? - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
Try Method 1 first. If no joy, please check the WindowsUpdate.log for a FATAL error(s) - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093
Post back with the most *recent* FATAL error. The entries toward the bottom of the log are the most recent entries.
