You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or the "0x80246008" code when you try to download updates from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910337
Can the Automatic Update service be started ? If not and attempting to do so results in a 1058 error code, than the system is infected with malware. Using Internet Explorer, go here and have the system scanned:

If Vundo/Virtumonde/Zlob/and/or SDBot are detected, than you'll need futher assistance in getting the system cleaned up -

You should first try to run the System File Checker - http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html
If that doesn't resolve the issue, try this: http://www.wsuswiki.com/ProceduretomanuallyRe-InstallAutomaticUpdateClient
To open a Command Prompt go to Start > Run > type in cmd and then click OK or press Enter
Copy the command shown on the above page and then *right* click after the prompt, choose Paste, and then press Enter.
IF Automatic Updates still stays at Disabled then there is a serious issue going on. Either there's 2 software firewalls running at the same time, there is malware resident on the system, or you need to do a Repair Installation.

Ok, I've tried services.msc, BITS is started. Automatic Updates was
"Disabled". I make the "Automatic" - but when I hit "Apply" it usually
goes back to "Disabled".
On the infrequent occasions that it stays "Automatic", I then go START
and it gives me error 1058.
Next, I try "regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll" and I get the "Succeeded"
message. But stil no I still get error 0x8DDD0018.
Any ideas?
