I have tried everything which has been mentioned by Shenan and
still my issue hasn't been resolved. Now before I opt for the last
option (Take backup and format the HDD with Win XP SP2 CD), is
there any other solution which I can go in for?
Problem: I had repaired my laptop containing Win XP SP3/ IE 7 and
other s/w. The machine was loaded too much so I wanted to take off
those applications which are not necessary. My system got screwed
up after I tried to uninstall IE7 to go back to IE6 and lot of
system files got corrupted like sound, mspaint, iexplore.exe etc.
to name a few. The system restore utility failed even when I
created a restore point before performing this maintenance. While
searching for the solution of my problems, I found tht the problem
happens in SP3 after during switch over frm IE7 to IE6.
Solution Steps followed till now:
Method 1: Does not work. All 93 critical updates get downloaded but
they do not get installed. I don't get any error.
Method 2: Codeplex. It cleared all the download history & files and
I had to download all the critical updates again. They failed again
during installation.
Method 3: No change to the error after I executed Dial-a-fix
utility.
Also tried installing latest Windows Update v3. Got msg tht Windows
update agent i already running on this system.
Progress till now: Only 2 critical updates have been installed out
of 93 while performing these steps. After complete download,
Windows update seems tht it is installing files in the backgorund,
but nothing happens after waiting for long time. The update process
runs in the memory and then finishes after sometime.
You missed something then...
"Also tried installing latest Windows Update v3. Got msg tht Windows update
agent i already running on this system."
The /WUFORCE command line.
See the instructions for reinstalling it again:
- Reboot.
- Download/Install the latest Windows Update.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
(You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce"
right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.)
- Reboot.
If you are unsure what that means - here is the exact steps - one by one - I
suggest you do.
I realize you may have done all of this - I am giving you the exact steps to
follow, which I suggest you print and follow as given, in hopes that if you
follow them in this order and do them as instructed - you will get the
results you desire.
1. Reboot.
2. Logon as a user with administrative rights.
3. Start button --> RUN --> type in:
net stop wuauserv
---> Click OK.
4. Wait 30 seconds.
5. Start button --> RUN --> type in:
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll
---> Click OK.
6. Wait 15 seconds.
7. Start button --> RUN --> type in:
net start wuauserv
---> Click OK.
8. Wait 30 seconds.
9. Reboot.
10. Logon as a user with administrative rights.
11. Download the latest windows update agent:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
Saving it to the root of your C:\ drive.
12. Close Internet Explorer.
13. Start button --> RUN --> type in:
cmd /k c:\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /wuforce
---> Click OK.
14. When asked, click NEXT.
15. Select the "I Agree" radio button and click NEXT.
16. Wait while it copies files/updates the registry.
17. Click on FINISH.
18. Reboot.
19. Logon as a user with administrative rights.
** This part assumes you have restored IE6 on your computer. If you have
not and you actually have IE7 - then you can skip to step 23.
20. Download the IE6 installer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en
21. Run and install IE6 (Close Internet Explorer before doing this, of
course.)
22. Reboot.
-- END IE6 installation --
** If you did not have IE6 on your system, but have IE7 - this is where you
begin that section. If you did have IE6 and followed the directions right
before this - you skip this part until step 24.
23. To reset the settings to default in IE7, follow these instructions:
- Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
- On the Advanced tab, click Reset.
- In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.
- When Internet Explorer 7 finishes restoring the default settings,
click Close, and then click OK two times.
- Close Internet Explorer 7. The changes take effect the next time that
you open Internet Explorer 7.
-- END IE7 reset --
24. Reboot.
25. Logon as a user with administrative rights.
26. Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and if it tells you that you
need to update something to continue (before seeing a CUSTOM or EXPRESS or
SP3 option of any sort) - do so.
** If you have to choose whether to install SP3 - skip it for now and
install other updates.
27. Do a CUSTOM scan and choose one or two of the CRITICAL updates - not all
of them. No optional software or hardware updates. Install just one or
two.
- If it works - reboot and visit the site again and get a few more.
Repeat until you have all the critical updates - perhaps all the optional
software updates - I suggest avoiding the optional hardware updates
completely.
- If it does not work - you should disable your AntiVirus software
temporarily and try again (also - if you have a firewall other than the
Windows XP firewall, disable it and enable the Windows XP firewall for now.)
28. Come back - let me know what happened - if it worked or not and any
error messages the web page or anything else gave you - word for
word/letter-for-letter.
