Thank you, Michael! I was posting my second message just as you were posting
yours. I found the "don't show again" box finally by going to Custom, as you
noted. But it looks like for XP Pro it's no longer a voluntary update; it's
now shown as Priority, which means if you allow AU to do the downloads, WGA
Notification will be downloaded and installed. I like leaving AU on--but for
notification only. Then I can go to the Windows Update site and decide what
I want to do.

The WGA Notification is a voluntary update, unless you accept it. Once
accepted you are supposed not to be able to uninstall it. It is a new
version
being pushed at XP pro users. I think that there is a box you can uncheck,
which causes the gray "don't show me this update again" line to blacken,
check that box to get the annoying "(!) Important You've hidden important
updates" notice. At least, that's how it works at WU, using the "Custom"
option. I quit using AU some time ago - got nervous about sneaky moves.
Over on the left, when you open Security Center (via Control Panel),
under Resources you will see "Change the way Security Center alerts me"
Click it, uncheck the Automatic Updates box in Alert Settings. The AU
alert will no longer appear in the system tray. I have done that because I
turned AU off. If they set it to nag, I guess you could do it also.

I have two computers--an old desktop running WinXP Home SP3 and a new
notebook running WinXP Pro SP3. Today I received Automatic Update
notifications for both computers (mine always come on Wednesday). Only one
item is in the Priority Update "list" for the Home computer. However, two
items appear in the Priority Update list for the Pro computer--and one of
them is Windows Genuine Advantage Notification.
I don't want to download and install this program. Is there a way I can
reject it and still get rid of the AU shield in the taskbar?
Thank you!
Jo-Anne
