Re: Problems after Windows Update

I noticed over the past few months that when I install KB890830 I no longer
have internet access. This item seems to be a particular nuisance around
here. I have been able to do system restore and no longer have in installed.
It wants to reinstall, but I will not at this point.

I fixed this on my own. Simply ran the XP upgrade from the CD and it fixed
the problem and retained everything else.

Now the debate is whether or not to update the PC with the service packs.

Tried your suggestions below and still have the same problem. MS support
said to call back if SFC /scannow didn't work. The cynic in me thinks they
had me do that just to get me off the phone.

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the WINDOWS directory, usually at
C:\WINDOWS . Open the $NtUninstallKB896688$ folder. Open the spuninst
folder. Double click spuninst.exe. This will uninstall KB896688.
Restart the system and see if the issues are gone.

I contacted MS support and the tech had me re-register a number of dll's
(urlmon.dll, actxprxy.dll, mshtml.dll, browseui.dll, jscript.dll,
vbscript.dll, oleaut32.dll, shdocvw.dll, msjava.dll, scrrun.dll, msxml.dll)
which didn't help.

He then had me run sfc /scannow which he said could run for a while and I
could contact them again if it didn't solve the problem, which of course it
didn't.

Briefly again, my problem is that I can't type into the body of an email in
Outlook or into something like the search field in Google. I don't have any
problem typing the address or subject in an email, nor do I have a problem
entering a URL in IE.

I'm open for any suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

My home computer (Win XP Home Edition w/SP2) was automatically updated with
KB905749, KB904706, KB900725, KB905414, KB896688, KB902400, KB901017 and
KB890830. After the update, I can no longer type in any internet based
application, even something like this group (currently accessing using my
work computer), Outlook Express, Google, etc. I use MSN Premium from
Verizon.

In addition, it appears all of my system restore points have been removed,
so I can't restore to prior to the auto update and the updates loaded don't
appear in the add/remove program list.

Any ideas?
