The installed antivirus/security software/3rd party firewall is preventing the Windows Update Agent from installing. Suggest you download the agent first, disconnect the system from the net/network, *temporarily and completely DISABLE all security software*, then install the WUA from an *elevated* command prompt [ for Vista ] after stopping the Windows Update service:

Reboot, * reenable ALL security software *, then reconnect the system.

Thank you for fast and informative answer!.
I believe I pressed the wrong button when I replied, so here it comes again ...
a) When I try to download and reinstall the Windows Update I get the following message (translated from Swedish):
"An irreversible error occurred during installation of the Windows Update agent".
The it stops.
b) I cannot fetch a new version of Windows Update, since that requires Windows Update.
Is there a way around this?
c) Your third suggestion I hesitate to try - the tone in the article scares me a bit. I am not aware of any special settings. What consequences can this have, provided I make everything right?

I have used Windows Update on W Vista for a long time without problems, but now suddenly it stopped working. When I try to start it, it says "Error code 80070005". I get the impression that one of the updates caused this ...
Any idea about how to cure it?
