Re: app's seen in programs/features not shown in 'installed update

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Thanks for your message, Harry.

I guess I should be 'thankfull' that a reference to this SQL application was
even entered in 'programs and features', if as you say other 3rd party (i.e.
non microsoft) applications tend to do the same thing and do NOT often place
any kind of entry in programs and features. It still kind of bugs me though,
that there was and is no reference to the SQL installation from
Windows/Microsoft Update. After all, if there HAD been a reference to the
'required' installation of it before hand, I would never have been alarmed at
it's appearance in Programs and Features.

Noticing your link at the bottom of your reply, I am guessing that you are
either NOT a fan of the Olympics in general or possibly not in favour of them
being held in China.

I find the whole athletic excercise quite boring for the most part, but can
definately appreciate that the inherent 'prestige' that China and it's
government institutions and officers are trying to gain by it is most
definately NOT deserved. The Chinese government hierarchy deserve no prestige
from this event for the same reason that South Africa, and the former
U.S.S.R. was rightly ostracised by boycotts of sporting events due to their
'pollitical differences' from properly democratic countries. As much as some
people want to keep pollitics and sport seperate, this will never happen
while dictators from the left and right try to gain themselves undeserved
prestige from it.

Remember the Berlin Olympics (Hitler was Chancellor of Germany at the time)
and Hitler refused to give the Gold medal to Jesse Owens, just because of his
skin colour?

Security updates can sometimes apply to applications other than the one they are
named after. Office is particularly freaky in this regard. It doesn't sound
like anything to worry about.

I have recently installed some 'Windows Live' applications (live mail, live
writer and live photo gallery) in order to see if they are any different or
'better' than the 'non-live' versions, and I have no idea if that was the
cause of the 'hidden SQL installation' but they were installed on the same
day.

I don't know, but this may be the case. If so, it is because one or more of
those applications needed the SQL database in order to function.

It isn't particularly uncommon for either Microsoft or third-party applications
to install additional system components as necessary, although typically they
don't bother to tell you about it by putting an entry in Add/Remove Programs.
