Thanks to both for replies.

Harry, I had already emailed them twice so they already know there is a
problem. In Britain the phone number is an expensive 0870 number - NOT FREE.

Dear Mr Bear!

I eventually succeeded after a couple of attempts with the ...._en-US.cab
file. The shield still popped up today but then installed the update
properly.

This was well below standard for an update. NOT "user-ready". I begrudge
time being wasted on this sort of thing when I have plenty of my own chores
to be getting done and professional deadlines to meet. Gives computers a bad
name, but we're stuck with them, it seems!

identify the appropriate download (e.g., KB955428_en-US.cab for English-US
machines) and then SAVE that (cab) file.]

I've tried every disc that could possibly be relevant and searched the
hard
drive for the file they mention and it is all totally useless.

Did you try downloading the full update installer as PA Bear originally
suggested?
1. Right-click on the following link and SAVE the download to your
desktop
(do NOT Run it):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=458985C3-9C6F-4049-81CD-0D0389C81F11

2. Right-click on the saved file and select "Run as Administrator"

3. Follow all prompts.

Well. I'm not going to waste more time and money on a phone call to them.
If enough of us complain, they'll have to do something about it
eventually.........

Um. If you don't phone them, how will they know you're complaining?
(Also,
note that since this is a security update it should qualify for free
support.)
Harry.
