I had the same problem on 6 client computers where it was pre installed . and 10 others also had the cd but it would not work.
what i do not understand is how microsoft did not test this patch first on different computers running ms works first. then they would have seen this problem that you, my clients and hundreds of others who have ms works 8 are experiencing when trying to do the download from Windows Update.

What if you don't HAVE an installation CD? Mine came pre-installed on my Dell and there were no disks and no installation files that I can find. isn't there a way to tell it to skip this update?

This is the answer to you question from an earlier posting.
1. Download the update from this link (SAVE it to your desktop, don't RUN
it):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=458985C3-9C6F-4049-81CD-0D0389C81F11&displaylang=en

2. Insert your MS Works 8 CD (if available) into the appropriate drive bay.

3. Double-click on the saved file to install the update; follow all prompts.
