Re: Shutdwn FATAL: WUCheckForUpdatesAtShutdown failed, hr=80240FFF

Enable the following service, reboot, and see if the errors appear in the WU.log.
If no errors, disable them one at a time, in the order they're listed, until you find which one is causing the error to appear :

DNS Client
IPSEC Services
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
WebClient

Hi,

Running Windows XP SP2 with all available SP2 updates, each time I boot or reboot my PC, windowsupdate.log records the following (apparent) error message:

I prefer to manually update Windows XP at www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us, so the following Windows XP Services are 'Disabled' when I am not updating:

- Automatic Updates (wuauserv)
- Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)

However, when I do update, at MS' update website, I set 'Automatic Updates' to Automatic (and Start the service) and I set 'Background Intelligent Transfer Service' to Manual (and if there are updates available, it starts itself and sets Automatic). When finished, if rebooting is required (after rebooting) or if rebooting is not required, I return both service to 'Disabled.'

Using Windows Firewall, with no anti-virus software running, as a 56K dial-up user, home PC, single user, no home network, the remaining Windows XP SP2 services are set as follows:

How do I correct my system to eliminate the (apparent) errors from happening, and subsequently being recorded in windowsupdate.log?

Many thanks,
