Re: Windows update installing updates over riding my settings

To open the WindowsUpdate.log
click Start > Run > in the Open: field copy and paste the below

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Click OK or press Enter.
The WindowsUpdate.log will now be open.

It's located in (usually) C:\WINDOWS
You can use Windows Explorer [Start > All Programs > Accessories] to navigate to WINDOWS, right click WindowsUpdate.log and choose Send to - Compressed folder. Name it anything you'd care to and email to me, please.

Sorry, looking at this post I certainly left out info, but thank you for
pointing them out to me. I honestly had not thought of them.

Vista Home SP1, Avast anti-virus, spysweeper, spyware blaster, windows
firewall, spybot without TeaTimer and that is it.

And is Automatic Updates still set to "Notify Only" or has it reverted
back
to the earlier setting?

In any event, if you found or find that the setting had reverted back to
an
earlier setting, chances are that Spysweeper's real-time protection was
the
responsible party. However...

If you'd been using Windows Update as your default update source and then
switched it to Microsoft Update (offers updates for Windows, Office, and
Windows Live), making that switch will reset Automatic Updates back to
the
"Automatic" setting.


I am using Windows Update and the setting is still on Notify of updates
but let me choose whether to download and install. But yesterday an
update was automatically installed and the setting was to download and
install only if I choose. I had checked it earlier that day. So I assume
it is SpySweeper, so how do I fix it? I don't want it on Automatic,which
it isn't anyway. What a mess. Now what?

Can you identify the update that was automatically installed yesterday,

1. Please open Control Panel | Automatic Updates and confirm that Option #3 (Notify Only) is selected & OK your way out.

2. Please open Contol Panel | Security Center and confirm that the status of your anti-virus application (Avast), the WIndows Firewall, and Automatic Updates is (a) being monitored and (b) that the status for AV and firewall is ON (green) & that the status for AU is CHECK SETTINGS (yellow).

3. Reboot, then repeat #1 and tell me if the setting has changed to AUTOMATIC.

4. Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed?

I followed your directions and the setting did not change to automatic

McAfee nor Norton has ever been installed.
Do you still want a copy of the updates? Still don't know where Windows Directory is and I would like to know but only if it is not a problem for you. I know you are busy. I really appreciate you helping me. I read something about your site and what you guys do. Don't think many people understand you are helping us "on your own time". :) :)
