Fresh install TODAY of SP2 from borrowed CD since I lost my

The updater worked to update to SP3 and several security patches,
probably 10-12 updates today.
I upgraded to IE7 and Media player 11 without problem. It seems
though that as soon as I installed Windows Defender that the
updater stopped downloading the security patches. It continues to
find the patches both when I run updater manually and
automatically. But in neither case will the files be downloaded.
Since the files are not being downloaded of course the file size
and minutes to be installed are zero. After I installed the
non-downloaded files a window opens and says the install failed but
there is never an error message. Of course the install will fail
since the download failed as evidenced by the zero bytes and
minutes.
When I installed Defender or after running the updater (I forgot
the order of events) I saw an error message of 0X80004002.
I have since uninstalled Defender but that did not help either.
I have have read several posts and tried fixes such as:
1. running CCleaner in regular and safe mode - nothing found other
than temp internet files
2. scanned drive with SPybot - nothing found but cookies. Also
tried updater with Spybot turned off but the problem started before
Spybot was installed.
3. clock time and date are correct.
4 made numerous changes to IE security settings as suggested in
various threads to no avail.
5. changes to activeX controls (enabling items) but the changes did
not help
This is the second clean install I have made on this computer this
week. It seems that the updater quick working both times after
installing Windows Defender. The install today was to verify when
it quit working and I am sure that it was after installing Defender.
The machine is a Compaq Pentium 4 with 1.5 meg of ram. I have a
second machine that is not experiencing this problem. Help!!
Tried this...?
As many will tell you - ignore the title and symptoms listed in the article
referred to. Do method 1 and 2 and see if it fixes your issue whether or
not you repaired anything.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
Try method 1 and try to update*.
If fails - try method 2 and try to update*.
*try to update:
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
- If it asks you to install anything before you see a selection of "Custom"
or "Express" - do so.
- Once you see the "Custom" or "Express" selection, choose "Custom".
- Scan for updates.
- When it lists what it finds - install the critical ones.
- You are generally safe doing the Optional Software Updates. I suggest
avoiding the Optional Hardware Updates completely.
