No. The KB article still applies.

Thank you for the quick reply...I'll do this when I get home from work. One quick question...When I said I was rebuilding by system I mean that I started from a clean formatted disk...it was not a "repair" per se'. Does this make any difference?

Ignore the title and try:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Do Method 1 first. If no joy, then install the latest Version of the Windows Update Agent from a Command Prompt as laid out here:

I am rebuilding my XP Pro system. I installed from the XP/SP2 CD. When I reconnected to the network I received an update message and SP3 was installed. Everything seemed to be working well. The next day I received an update message and ok'd the install. The update appeared to have downloaded OK and updater went into the install mode. After a few seconds I got a message that the updated failed to install. The failure did not show up in the update history. I manually downloaded the files and was able to install the two updates successfully.

What would be causing this failure...is there any troubleshooting I can do or fix that can be applied to get the automatic update working again. Is this a common problem?

Thanks for any feedback.
