it's FIXED!!!!
i tried safe mode with networking again, and although it complained it could
not start the bits admin in safe mode, upon reboot, the windows update panel
showed all the available updates. I tried to download them and received an
error in the event log, gave up and went to bed. I changed the automatic
time to update at 6 AM. Booted this morning, and the updates downloaded, the
system shield appeared on the shutdown button and upon exiting, the updates
were installed!!
Thanks to both of you for your help! This was driving me nuts, as I have
two of the exact same laptops, one with the problem, the other without.
thanks

no luck yet, under safe mode, bits can't run, according to the error.
messages, so the fix up via bits admin won't work in safe mode. on the plus
side the services were down, so i didn't get the can't stop the service
message..
am going to retry running normally.
i turned off zone alarm, had no effect either way but it was a good try!

ZA Antivirus contains a firewall, too. Has it been disabled ?
I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts that ZA AV is what's causing the
issues. Perhaps booting to SM with networking will get WU functioning as
ZA *should* not be running in that mode.

Yes the script does try to register all the possible dlls even if they are
not preset.
wucltui.dll should register however.
In the c:\aulogs directory there will be two cab files. Can you open the

I'm also currious if we boot into safe mode with networking if we would
have more luck with the tool (or using msconfig to disable 3rd party
services)

Hi Eddie,
I never get a prompt to install anything upon shutdown. (or i would). The
windows update panel just has the searching for updates green bar and never
stops searching, also the icon never appears in the system tray either. I
know it used to prompt me to install, and also upon shutting down it would
show a shutdown icon with the system shield which would notify me of
installs, but that doesn't occur anymore.
net stop of either service says the service is stopping
...................................... and then says the service could not
be shut down. I can get the exact wording tomorrow if needed. on the plus
side event viewer shows the communication happening again for windows
update,
which wasn't working since 5/27 until i tried the script, so it is getting
better..
the registration of dlls, this is strange, i tried the first 3 and they do
not exist in the system32 directory, I checked another laptop and those
dlls
don't exist on it either in system32 directory. remember i am using vista
premium sp1. Only thing I can figure is that the script tries to register
dll's reguardless of operating system, and doesn't care if they don't
exist.
Mow asked what security i am using, zone alarm antivirus 2007 for vista.
thanks for the help.
