Hi Eddie,
I never get a prompt to install anything upon shutdown. (or i would). The
windows update panel just has the searching for updates green bar and never
stops searching, also the icon never appears in the system tray either. I
know it used to prompt me to install, and also upon shutting down it would
show a shutdown icon with the system shield which would notify me of
installs, but that doesn't occur anymore.
net stop of either service says the service is stopping
....................................... and then says the service could not
be shut down. I can get the exact wording tomorrow if needed. on the plus
side event viewer shows the communication happening again for windows update,
which wasn't working since 5/27 until i tried the script, so it is getting
better..
the registration of dlls, this is strange, i tried the first 3 and they do
not exist in the system32 directory, I checked another laptop and those dlls
don't exist on it either in system32 directory. remember i am using vista
premium sp1. Only thing I can figure is that the script tries to register
dll's reguardless of operating system, and doesn't care if they don't exist.
Mow asked what security i am using, zone alarm antivirus 2007 for vista.
thanks for the help..

From the windowsupdate.log it looks like it's working, so it might just be.
the UI thats having issues.
I even see that it prompts you to istall the downloaded updates at shutdown:
2008-06-10 08:43:38:224 1216 42c Shutdwn user declined update at shutdown
Can we see if we get errors when we run a few of the steps manually?
First, do you get errors when you do:
Net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
(do net start bits and net start wuauserv to start them again).
How about when you try to register those dlls manually? Example:
regsvr32.exe mucltui.dll

the control panel still would not come up so i ran SCF /scannow.
it reported some errors which seemed to be centered around .ini files which
seem to be a known issue.
I haven't checked the whole thing yet as it is a big file.
rebooted and the CONTROL PANEL/windows update now displays something, and
when i hit the button to check for updates I can see the progress bar, BUT
now it never returns nothing.
so we are half way there, at least it functions and i can see which updates
were applied before.
also it no longer says microsoft updates, but windows updates. i had it
setup to get all updates (like office 2007, originally).
thanks, mike
