You probably need to get Subinacl.exe, make a Reset.cmd file
and run it - exactly as Method 3 instructs you to do at this link:

You've probably already tried that link's Methods 1 & 2.

Yes it does say access denied. I'm sorry I thought I put that in the
first
message

I have even tried to download the update more then once thinking
I
downloaded a corrupt file. It will run through the installation
of
the files then it tells me it's not allowed. It then tells me
that
there was a service pack 3 setup error, and that the install did
not complete. After I click 'ok' windows runs the removal wizard
and uninstalls everything that it already completed. This has
happened several times already. Has anybody encountered this
already. If so how do I fix it. The computer is running fine but
I've had to shut off the automatic updates until this get
fixed......

Does it say, "Access Denied"?
It is very important you give the exact error message...

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

I had the same problem as Eric, with the "Access Denied" message when I
tried to install Windows XP Service Pack 3. I had disabled my
trendMicro anti-virus as suggested by Microsoft, but without success.

I then uninstalled 2 free anti-spyware programs on my PC. These were
Spy Sweeper (from Webroot Software) and Norton Security Scan (installed
as part of a Google Pack). Then, with TrendMicro anti-virus still
temporarily disabled, I was able to install Service Pack 3 without a
problem.

I don't know which program caused the problem with Service Pack 3 since
I uninstalled both. I hope this advice may help others.
