I'm not sure I understand your point of view.

Plus, your response didn't really answer my question. Which is whether I have to uninstall zone alarm before updating to
SP3, or whether I just need to turn it off.

a little bit older version that I like very much because it does not nag me.

The windows firewall deals with inbound protection and therefore does not
give you a false sense of security. Best of all, it doesn't implement lots
of nonsense like pretending that outbound traffic needs to be monitored.
Activate and utilize the Win XP SP2 built-in Firewall; Uncheck *all*
Programs and Services under the Exception tab.
In conjunction with WinXP SP2 Firewall use:
Seconfig XP 1.0
http://seconfig.sytes.net/
Seconfig XP is able configure Windows not to use TCP/IP as transport
protocol for NetBIOS, SMB and RPC, thus leaving TCP/UDP ports 135, 137-139
and 445 (the most exploited Windows networking weak point) closed.)
OR
Configuring NT-services much more secure.

I don't want to uninstall it before applying SP3. Is it enough if I
unload it? Or are there Services that will interfere with SP3's
installation?

Don't take your chances with ZA!

1.Make an Image backup of the hard drive/Windows Partition before you
install SP3.
2.Test your System Restore to see if it is working correctly.
3. Make absolutely sure the machine's free of any hijackware, Trojan, or
virus infections before installing SP3.
4. Run Disk Cleanup then run a Defrag session before installing SP3.
5. Disable all real-time protections (anti-virus; anti-spyware; third-party
firewall) before downloading/installing SP3.
6. Reboot twice after installing SP3.
7. Run another Defrag.

Good luck :)
