Finally...I have found the problem. I read somewhere on the net that
internet explorer 8 beta 1 is not currently supported by windows xp service
pack 3. I uninstalled and reinstalled internet explorer 7 and the update
magically appeared on the windows update site.
See http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/05/05/ie-and-xpsp3.aspx [This information was posted in an Announcement in this newsgroup before SP3 was released.]
BUT then, i was installing the update when it said 'access in denied'
Error message when you try to install WinXP SP3: "Access is denied" or “Service Pack installation did not complete”

BUT then, i was installing the update when it said 'access in denied' when
editing the registry. I knew there was a problem with my registry and could
not find a fix.
In the end, i reformatted windows but kept all my personal data on the drive
and after third time lucky, installed without a hitch. I have had it on
since this morning with no crashes or reboots :).
However, for some puculiar reason, an issue with appeared with firefox after
installing this update - however, this is very minor. The only other
problem i have faced, which is now fixed, was updates were failing after
the update, but a microsoft patch fixed this.
Don't really see any noticable changes in this service pack apart from
slighty better speed.

Wait before installing - I've developed what a lot of us in the IT
industry have adopted as a precautionary approach to services packs -
wait 6 months and watch the blogs. If you dont have anything thats
broken dont try to fix it with something thats only been realeased for
2 days. Besides - if you have been using windows updates all along -
you already have most of what is in the service pack anyway. read this
article first before you decide to install. Many reports of continual
reboots after applying SP3.

I still cannot recieve SP3 through windows update which baffles me as
wikipedia and news pages says it is available through windows update. Is
this a server issue with microsoft because this is confusing me and
doesn't make any sense. BUT with all the problems so far with SP3, this
might be a blessing in disguise.
