order to rectify any inconsistencies in the OS.

IF SP1 is *not* being offered from WU, there might be another reason as
to why:

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from
Windows Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948343

This *should* be the one to pay attention to:

The Windows Update service will not offer Windows Vista SP1 until an update for the hardware device
driver or the device software has been installed.

Go over " Method for Cause 5 " to see if a driver might be the reason
why SP1 was not offered via WU.

Packs, save them, and then move them to the root drive [ the drive where
Windows is installed to ], completely and totally disable *all*
installed antivirus/security suite/anti-malware software, run Check Disk,

If one has no internet connection than one does what you've already done
.... use a family member or friend's system to download the updates.
Place them on portable media and then install them on your system.

Put it on portable media [the pen drive] and then transfer it to the
system you wish to update.
DO NOT run it from the pen drive.
