Re: Updates if no internet connection

Thank you, much clearer.

Run this to find out if the system is ready for *any* package of SP1:

Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

If the system checks out, download and save the standalone package.
There are 3 prerequisites updates that are required before instaling the
SP1 package that is available from Windows Update.
Vista Home Premium requires 2:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938371/
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937287/

Both of the above KBs mention this:

If you decide to install Windows Vista SP1 by using the stand-alone installer instead of by using
Windows Update, you will not have to install the prerequisite updates separately. The prerequisite
updates will be installed by the stand-alone installer if they are necessary.

So, in your situation, *no* prerequisite updates need be installed since
you plan to use the stand-alone package.
BUT, you really should run http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 in
order to rectify any inconsistencies in the OS.

IF SP1 is *not* being offered from WU, there might be another reason as
to why:

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from
Windows Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948343

This *should* be the one to pay attention to:

The Windows Update service will not offer Windows Vista SP1 until an update for the hardware device
driver or the device software has been installed.

Go over " Method for Cause 5 " to see if a driver might be the reason
why SP1 was not offered via WU.

Clear ?

Hi there

Sorry to be painful about this, I read through a lot of the articles you
suggested, but I think I need the dumberer version. I still can't work out if
I need to install the three pre-SP1 updates even if I am using the standalone
version of SP1. And one of those three has now been removed (can't remember
which one). So not sure what to do. Btw, I have Vista Home Premium.

You're mowst welcome. IMHO, it's always best to download entire Service
Packs, save them, and then move them to the root drive [ the drive where
Windows is installed to ], completely and totally disable *all*
installed antivirus/security suite/anti-malware software, run Check Disk,
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/bc1393cf-9f9c-79c7-0f91-9337c2c41f811033.mspx
then run the native Disk Defragmentation tool or a 3rd party Disk
Defragmenter and then install the SP.

If you're going to use the Standalone of Vista SP1, I would also recommend:

Thank you so much for all this information! One more thing, as Microsoft have
made changes to some of the security updates, would it be best to download
SP1 Standalone again (after 8 April)?

Btw, my Vista is Home Premium.

Hi there

I do not have an internet connection, I am writing this from a friend's
computer. I have a Toshiba laptop. I have managed to download SP1 to a pen
drive and was thinking of installing this on my laptop, but now I am worried
because I don't know if this will cause problems (some have been reported
with SP1).

What do you do if you don't have an internet connection? Just never get your
windows updated?

If one has no internet connection than one does what you've already done
.... use a family member or friend's system to download the updates.
Place them on portable media and then install them on your system.
One can obtain almost all of the updates from the Microsoft Update
Catalog: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx
or, the MS Download Center:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Search.aspx?displaylang=en

ALL Security updates are available from both places.
For an ongoing list of Security updates:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx

Security updates are available on ISO-9660 DVD5 image files from the
Microsoft Download Center
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913086

Microsoft now releases ISO-9660 DVD5 image files that contain all the security updates that are
released on the Microsoft Windows Update Web site for Windows. The ISO image files are released
at the same time as security updates are released on the Windows Update Web site.
The ISO image files are intended for corporate administrators who:
• Manage large multinational organizations.
• Must download multiple individual language versions of each security update.
• Do not use an automated solution such as Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

For a list of *all* updates published this year by month:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894199

Last year: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930858

As to installing SP1, depending upon which version of Vista that is
installed, there are prerequisites that *must* be installed and are
included with the *stand-alone* package of SP1 but NOT included in the
package downloaded via Windows/Automatic updates:

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from
Windows Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948343

Hiding updates as an alternative resolution for Cause 7

You can select not to install an offered update by un-checking the item from the Windows Update
list and agreeing to hide the update. Microsoft does not recommend doing this. Specifically,
Windows Vista SP1 will not be offered to users who hide one of the following updates:
• For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base:
935509 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935509/) A software update is available for versions of
Windows Vista that include the Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption feature
• For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base:
938371 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938371/) A software update is available for the Windows
Vista installation components
• For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base:
937287 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937287/) A software update is available for the Windows
Vista installation software feature

IF this is NOT Vista Ultimate or Enterprise, than the first update
listed for Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption is *not* needed.

Finally, there is:

Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

Things to know before you download Windows Vista SP1
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/bb968859.aspx

Learn how to install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/Help/133c8953-c9cd-4fa5-8883-03e91bb6f2021033.mspx

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330)
[x86 -32bit] -
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B0C7136D-5EBB-413B-89C9-CB3D06D12674&displaylang=en

The above is the entire stand-alone package for x86|32-bit Vista
versions from the MS Download Center. It is larger than the package
delivered via Windows|Automatic updates.

Suggest you peruse the articles above and then delete the previously
downloaded SP1 *unless* you obtained it from the above URL.
Put it on portable media [the pen drive] and then transfer it to the
system you wish to update.
DO NOT run it from the pen drive.
