Run this to find out if the system is ready for *any* package of SP1:
Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista

If the system checks out, download and save the standalone package.
There are 3 prerequisites updates that are required before instaling the SP1 package that is available from Windows Update.
Vista Home Premium requires 2:

Both of the above KBs mention this:
If you decide to install Windows Vista SP1 by using the stand-alone installer instead of by using Windows Update, you will not have to install the prerequisite updates separately. The prerequisite updates will be installed by the stand-alone installer if they are necessary.
So, in your situation, *no* prerequisite updates need be installed since you plan to use the stand-alone package.
BUT, you really should run http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 in order to rectify any inconsistencies in the OS.
IF SP1 is *not* being offered from WU, there might be another reason as to why:
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from Windows Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates

This *should* be the one to pay attention to:
The Windows Update service will not offer Windows Vista SP1 until an update for the hardware device driver or the device software has been installed.
Go over " Method for Cause 5 " to see if a driver might be the reason why SP1 was not offered via WU.

If one has no internet connection than one does what you've already done .... use a family member or friend's system to download the updates. Place them on portable media and then install them on your system.

The above is the entire stand-alone package for x86|32-bit Vista versions from the MS Download Center. It is larger than the package delivered via Windows|Automatic updates.
Suggest you peruse the articles above and then delete the previously downloaded SP1 *unless* you obtained it from the above URL.
Put it on portable media [the pen drive] and then transfer it to the system you wish to update.
DO NOT run it from the pen drive.
