Re: Failed Updates

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

After reinstalling my operating system and then reinstalling all my
software from the only viable backup I had available (created using
a test run of Laplink's PC Mover which I had [fortunately] created
a few weeks ago), I find that I cannot update Windows. At the
moment, there are 38 updates waiting for me, but each time they
fail with an error code of 80070002 or 80073712. I have gone
through the Microsoft procedure that advises deleting all the files
and folders in Datastore and Download folders in Windows and
although that cleared the history, it didn't solve the problem.
Neither could I find the free e-mail support link mentioned in the
Microsoft support page at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602/

Could someone advise me on this and also, how to use this service
shown on the support page above:-

"Note If you would rather send your issue to a support professional
and have a possible solution send to your e-mail address instead of
troubleshooting this issue yourself, click Microsoft Online
Assisted Support (no cost for issues related to getting updates) in
the open window that contains the installation error code. In the
issue report that you will be asked to send, make sure that you
mention the installation error code that you noted in step "d." "

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

(Try it even if you did a clean, not repair, installation.)
(Try it even if you performed some sort of restore - not repair install.)
(Try it even if you did an upgrade installation.)
(Try even if you think none of that fits...)

Do all suggested methods. Hope that helps!

(Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and do a custom scan after each
method/reboot.)
