Howdy Alan,

Since the OS on your system is Vista it would be unwise to apply advice given for an XP system, as Marco's is.

80070005 is an Access Denied error message which could be related to:

1) Malware being present on the system which changes Permissions to deny the system's ability to update
2) Security software [antivirus/security suite/firewall/pop/cookie blocker,etc]. EX: running 2 firewalls at the same time; antivirus software changing Permissions or, guarding system files/registry entries in order to make the system "more secure", etc.

Suggest you start a new thread with the error code [ 80070005 ] and Vista version as the Subject.

Try this first ... go to Start > Run > type in

cmd
Click OK or press Enter

At the prompt, type in and then press Enter after each command
[please note the spaces]

net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
net start wuauserv
exit

Restart the system and see if the updates install now.
If not, Start > Run > type in or copy and paste the below into the Open: line and then click OK or press Enter

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Scroll all the way to the bottom of the log for the most recent entry.
Now work your way back up the log until you locate a FATAL or WARNING entry.
Copy and paste the sections just before and just after such entries into your reply please.

*PLEASE* include only the most *recent* FATAL and/or WARNING entries.
