The Background Intelligent Transfer Service is *severely* damaged and/or
has been stopped. It is a distinct possibility that KIS is responsible
for this updating issue in the first place. There are quite a few error
codes in the WindowsUpdate.log, Pierre, and if I didn't know better, I'd
bet my life that Norton had caused them, not KIS.

Open the Services console [Start > Run > type in
services.msc, click OK] and ensure it is at least set to Manual for
Startup type.
Also, there is a somewhat more current Version of BITS and WinHTTP
available that may resolve this issue. Download it from here and *save*

it:

An update package that includes BITS 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 is available
for Windows Server 2003, for Windows XP, and for Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842773

Check under the ' How to download and install the update package that

Which version of KIS is installed, is it monitoring port 80, and is
there a place in Options/Preferences where one can add safe URLs ?

There is definitely a time-out issue showing in the log but no error
codes are coming up at all. Suggest you work your way back up in the log

from here [ back up meaning to an earlier point in time ]:

Do a manual visit to Windows Update either with the link on the Start
Menu or open Internet Explorer and click Tools, Windows Update.
When the system fails to connect or download updates, close IE.
Now go to Start > Run > type in or copy and paste the below into the
