Re: My screen is yellow after a failed Update

BMK:

I missed the beginning of this thread, but if you're running
an ATI card or one the clones based on an ATI chip,
their Catalyst software was, in the past, based on .NET.
If your .NET is hosed, as it may be, Catalyst may be hosed.

You should try to uninstall your video driver & supporting stuff
THEN run a "cleaner" utility (avail. on ATI site) in Safe Mode.

Thanks to all who tried to help and it's much appreciated, although nothing
seems to have resolved this issue of my jaundiced screen! Tried everything
but nothing is helping, so it looks like I will have to sadly consult a local
technician which goes against the grain but .......... If and when I get it
resolved, I will post the answer in case it happens to anyone else. I must
say that I am totally perplexed on this one as usually there is a solution to
any problem, but I have never seen this type of incident before. Thanks again
guys for your input. Regards. Bill

These are some of the failed 16 updates:

Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista
(KB947172) Update for .NET Framework 3.0: x86 (KB932471)
Update for Windows Mail Junk E-mail Filter [February 2008]
(KB905866) Update for Windows Vista (KB931099)
Update for Windows Vista (KB931573)

Ah, Vista! And, therein lies the tale! I won't pick on you or
anyone for running Vista but absent a truly compelling reason to
go to it, like you need it for specific SW or because you bought
a new PC, I wouldn't even dream of upgrading yet.

I sincerely hope that you didn't try to install 16 updates in one
one and without manually setting your own RP! If it were me, I'd
have tried these in groups of 2 or 3, each with a manual RP,
restart my system, and check for problems, then move on to the
next. That way, I can isolate what update(s) caused the problem.

I installed an automatic update which somehow failed to
install. After rebooting my display is completely yellow
with no true colours. It shows perfect in SAFE MODE but as
soon as I go to normal Windows it loses all true colour as
if someone has removed the BLUE or RED from the overall
colour. Anyone help me or tell me what's gone wrong?

Beats me. Try rolling your system back to a RP before this
happens or try uninstalling the update from Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs. You do have RPs running, right and you
do know which KB update caused the problem, right?

You should read more carefully before commenting...

The update did NOT install. That was the first sentence of
the original posting. You cannot uninstall what was not
installed.

As for the auto-updates thing - for the majority of the
population the fully-automatic setting works great, and to be
realistic - is probably the only reason their machines stay
patched. ;-) Although the advice to do your updates in a
more controlled manner is good - the majority of the users
will never see this and they are likely set to automatic. No
need to say things in such a panicked manner...

The suggestion to get a new driver is because they may
actually need one - after all - things work fine in Safe
Mode. Perhaps they have a partially installed driver - they
did not specify what the update that failed WAS...

You have a good point, however...

bmkassociates,

Try a system restore point to before the failed update. See
if that fixes it.

What specific UPDATE failed on you?
