OK, so we've ruled out the update being the cause of the behavior. One down, several more to go.
1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start IE7 in No Add-ons mode:
Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or
Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No add-ons).
Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode:

2. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 <= Read before using!
3. If you uninstall (a) IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6), (b) all toolbars and (c) all third-party Windows Themes (including Window Blinds) and do NOT reinstall IE7, does this behavior persist?

IE7 (Un)Installation and Anti-Malware Applications:

If the behavior DOES persist in IE6, do NOT reinstall IE7, but post back to this thread. Otherwise...
4. Required reading IMHO before reinstalling IE7:
Sandi's Installation Tips <= FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO THE LETTER!
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install
[And I strongly recommend using http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx as the installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.]
Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after reinstalling IE7 to install any critical updates offered. If Optional Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

it for a while,...have bigger fish to fry.
thanks, again,

At this point, I expect the IE7 update (KB944533) may be the issue.
1a. Disable your anti-virus application, any real-time protection provided
by an anti-spyware application (except for Windows Defender; includes
Spybot Tea Timer, SpySweeper Guards, AVG AS guard.exe, etc.), disable any
third-party firewall AND enable the Windows Firewall.
NB: Do not connect the machine to the internet without the Windows Firewall
enabled!!
1b. Also disable Automatic Updates temporarily (Control Panel | Automatic
Updates).
NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online
(e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) except #3-#5 below until your
anti-virus application has been re-enabled! If you're running ZA Free
firewall, you may need to uninstall it instead of disabling it.
2. Uninstall "Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB944533)"
via Add/Remove Programs (make sure Show Updates box is checked at top
right) and reboot.
3. Confirm that the copy/paste issues does NOT persist. Don't do ANYTHING
else online! Even if the issues do persist, proceed as follows...
4. Re-do #1 above.
5. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any Critical
Updates offered. If "Root Certificates" update is listed in the Optional
Updates category, you might install it, too, to take full advantage of
IE7's additional security.
6. Reboot > Make sure everything in #1a and #1b above is enabled again and,
if applicable, disable the Windows Firewall and enable your third-party
firewall.

I have not tried the uninstall route, yet.
these are the auto updates installed, that I question, all since friday.
could this be a driver problem?
KB936782 media player 11 update
KB943055 security update xp
KB939683 media player 11 update
KB944533 security update, IE7
KB929399 media format 11 sdk
KB941569 security update xp w/media format runtime 9.5 and 11
KB946026 " " "
KB890830 malicious software removal tool
KB939683 media player 11 update
What are you copy/pasting when it doesn't work?
What updates did you install on the 15th? Did they include an upgrade to
IE7?
If you uninstall the updates via Add/Remove Programs, does the behavior
persist?
Please see this page http://dts-l.net/goodpost.htm then post back to this
thread with the information we'd need to be able to assist you properly.

yields
only a "snapshot" of new message page. later noticed problem surfing on
fleabay. I would like it to be there for me 100% of the time.
