Re: Vista constantly rebooting after this week's updates - "Configuring updates stage 3 of 3"

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

I have access to a BartPE (hxxp://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/) created Live
Windows CD. I believe there are other live cd builders as well. Anyway
I'm booting from a Live Windows CD; I can access the file system, and
copy to and from the main harddisk and external media (I currently have
a usb memory stck and a harddisk connected).

I talked to Acer support here in Norway, and their only solution was
also the alt-F10 total restore. They didn't even warn me that all the
data would be nuked and the system restored to factory defaults! Luckily
I asked them directly, and they confirmed it.

I've been playing around with various Registry entries. One that looked
promising was:

_LOCAL_MACHINE_SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\WindowsUpdate\AutoUpdate\Results.

There are 3 keys there:

Detect
Download
Install

On this machine both the Detect and Install had Errors that were NOT
0x0, while Download had en Errors entry that was 0x0.

Not feeling too comfortable with messing around with the Registry I
nonetheless modified The Detect and Install Errors to 0x0. Unfortunately
to no avail.

The errors were:

Detect Error: 0x8000FFFF
Install Errer: 0x800F082F

I also copied the download Update
(hxxp://www.microsoft.com/downloads/results.aspx?pocId=&freetext=KB937287&DisplayLang=en)
to the windows\softwaredistribion\download directory, but that didn't
help either, probably since the manually download file is in *.msu
format and I was unsuccessful when trying to unpack it in any way...

Can someone more knowledgeable than I, comment on my steps?

Again, Thanks!
