Hi,

I have the same problem and yes my Download folder is " full of folders
and/or 'files' that appear to be randomly named [such as
b763712ee43f0fd0430236022685ae9e6e5707bb]" - well 3 folders and 11 files, if
thats full.

so how does one get things to cycle out properly and get automatic updates
to appear in the systray again?

Navigate to WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
Right click the folders and choose Properties to find the date the
folders were created. What you are looking for are folders created on
the nearest date to today.
When you locate the folders associated with the recent downloaded
updates, open them and then open the update folder contained in each
one. [If one of the updates is for Windows Defender then it will be in a
folder named Install . The executable to install the defs is named mpas.exe]
There *should* be a catalog file for each update inside the update
folder that will appear in a format similar to KBxxxxxx.cat
That will tell you which update it is.
Compare and contrast to the installed updates in Add/Remove Programs in
the Control Panel.
If the update is not installed, then all you have to do is run
update.exe to get it installed.

Is the Download folder full of folders and/or 'files' that appear to be
randomly named [such as b763712ee43f0fd0430236022685ae9e6e5707bb] ?
If the answer is yes, then the installed updates are not cycling out
properly.
