Re: Automatic Update Icon Disappears after download

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Hi,

I have the same problem and yes my Download folder is " full of folders
and/or 'files' that appear to be randomly named [such as
b763712ee43f0fd0430236022685ae9e6e5707bb]" - well 3 folders and 11 files, if
thats full.

so how does one get things to cycle out properly and get automatic updates
to appear in the systray again?
--Thanks

Holiday,

Interesting conundrum ... If the OS is XP, please try this;
Show hidden files, folders, and system files
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp

Navigate to WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
Right click the folders and choose Properties to find the date the
folders were created. What you are looking for are folders created on
the nearest date to today.
When you locate the folders associated with the recent downloaded
updates, open them and then open the update folder contained in each
one. [If one of the updates is for Windows Defender then it will be in a
folder named Install . The executable to install the defs is named mpas.exe]
There *should* be a catalog file for each update inside the update
folder that will appear in a format similar to KBxxxxxx.cat
That will tell you which update it is.
Compare and contrast to the installed updates in Add/Remove Programs in
the Control Panel.
If the update is not installed, then all you have to do is run
update.exe to get it installed.

Is the Download folder full of folders and/or 'files' that appear to be
randomly named [such as b763712ee43f0fd0430236022685ae9e6e5707bb] ?
If the answer is yes, then the installed updates are not cycling out
properly.

Hello,

I've experienced this on multiple computers.
I have automatic updates set to download but
not install automatically. The icon usually stays
there until I click on it to install the updates.
Even if I reboot, it pops right up and balloons
me that I have updates waiting to be installed.

Now it just disappears. It will not prompt me until
I shutdown. Then I have to choice to install
updates or "click here to shutdown without installing
updates" Even on a reboot where I have not installed
the updates, it still will not prompt me.
(I like to see what I'm installing before I install)

I've tried changing the notification to "Install
Automatically" but this made no difference.
