Marc,

You're mowst welcome. Whatever is causing this issue still remains to be
figured out. What's apparently occurring is that the update server is
checking the validity of the wuredir and wsus3setup.cabs and the
communication between the system and the server ceases. Thus, the update
server attempts to download the .cabs and that fails, too, due to the
communication breakdown [ thank you, Led Zeppelin <w>]
For now, we'll blame Led Zep ...

Could you check in the
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WuRedir
subfolder and tell me:

1) How many folders are in there
2) Open the folders contained therein, then right click the wuredir.xml
files and post back the the Created and Modified dates of them
3) Which ISP you use

OK, Here goes.
1) 2 folders
2) the create and modified dates for each are the exact same,
March 21, 2007 12:48:26

3) I have Comcast cable modem, which I've had for nearly 10 years, first in
Philly, now in south Florida.

Hope this helps. Thanks.

Thanks

Fixwareout.exe is ONLY meant for systems that are infected with that
specific malware. It's good that your system is not afflicted with it,
bad when someone posts that Users should run malware specific tools with
no evidence that the Users systems are not infected.

XP SP2 is installed, correct ?
Could you please do a manual visit to Windows Update once more ?
When the error appears, close IE.
Then go to Start > Run > type in or copy&paste the following into the
Open: line

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Click OK or press Enter
Copy and paste the last 30 or so lines of the log into your reply, please.

I've tried everything here, the microsoft solutions and the fixwareout.exe
program. Still get the above error when trying to use windowsupdate. My AV
is Windows Live OneCare, which I've had for over a year and up to about 3
weeks ago never had a problem using windowsupdate. No changes to my system
(afaik) software additions or deletions. Again any help is greatly
appreciated. Thanks.

Gent - try this
download fixwareout -http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
Note: You will need to run this tool while having an Internet Connection.
The tool will download other files while running.
Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run
fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an
additional files from the internet), please don't let your firewall block it,
but allow it instead.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may
take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt).

After that try the microsoft update - it worked great for me.
If you think about it, let me know.

Hi gang,

I have encountered a challenge when connecting to Windows Update. I get the
0x80072EE7 error.

I've tried the following:

- Checked the Hosts file for any static IP addresses - nothing
- I tried the guided help - no luck
- Internet connectivity is fine
- Firewall has been eliminated as a problem
- I had used a software accelerator (ashampoo); however I removed it and
then reset the Internet connection settings using DRTCP
- Windows Update and Microsoft Update have been added to the Trusted Sites
list
- I removed the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration
- Background Intelligent Transfer Service is running properly
- Event Log is running properly
- Cryptographic Service is fine
- cache is cleared
- The system has been restarted
- Easycleaner and Xtech show nothing unusual in the startups - programs or
services

As you can see, I have exhausted the MS suggestions. I really hope someone
can help!- Hide quoted text -

All:
I have tried everything suggested by Microsoft plus these posts.
The last thing was to run fixwareout.exe Unfortunately, non of these
fixes have worked ! I Still the Error 0x80072EE7 when attempting to
get MS XP Updates! Any suggestions.
